Starred Review Books and films almost beyond number have been inspired by the 'Cambridge Spies,' five well-bred, brilliant English university students recruited to spy for the Soviet Union in the 1930s. Their efforts helped Stalin defeat the Nazis, press the Cold War, and even brought down the government of Harold Macmillan in 1963. They also created a cottage industry of speculation that their number was larger. Playing on that speculation is what Cumming is up to in his latest novel. History professor Sam Gaddis, facing mounting financial problems, learns that there was a sixth Cambridge spy. People with information Sam needs for the book that will get him out of debt begin to die, and Sam must wonder not only if he will be next but whether his assailant will come from Russia's FSB or Britain's MI6. Cumming's plot is appropriately convoluted, and the convolutions drive the narrative. The characters are well drawn, especially Sam and a sly 91-year-old former spook in a nursing home. Cold War hot spots, including Moscow, Berlin, Vienna, and Budapest, as well as Cambridge circa 1933, are rendered skillfully. The Trinity Six is a fine successor to Typhoon (2009) for a young author already compared with le Carr' and Littell. --Thomas Gaughan

En aquesta vuitena entrega de la sèrie del expolicia Miquel Mascarell, Jordi Sierra i Fabra ens endinsa en una trama tant intensa com addictiva que delectarà qualsevol lector de novel·la negra. Són els anys cinquanta, l’inspector Mascarell i la seva dona, la Patro, estan a punt de ser pares quan Barcelona està immersa en un període d’agitació social a causa de l’augment del preu del tramvia. Un dia, en Pere Humet, un antic subordinat d’en Mascarell d’abans de la guerra, li explica que en Piñol, l’Arnella i en Matarrodona, tres policies que també havien estat a les ordres de l’exinspector van marxar junts a l’exili, al camp de refugiats d’Argelers, i després van treballar en el reforç de la Línia Maginot, fins que els alemanys els van enviar a Mauthausen. Tots tres van sobreviure, amb penes i treballs, a aquell infern fins que el capritx d’un oficial alemany va desencadenar l’horror, va obligar en Piñol a matar l’Arnella d’un tret al cap. Tot seguit el va obligar a fer el mateix a l’Humet, però la pistola només tenia una bala: l’Humet es va salvar i va jurar venjar-se d’en Piñol, que va començar a col·laborar amb els alemanys i va ser el responsable de la mort dels altres presoners. Quan l’inspector va a buscar-lo, troba el cadàver de l’antic company i el de la seva cosina, que han mort apunyalats. L’acusat és en Nicolau, l’exnòvio de la noia, però l’instint de policia d’en Mascarell li diu que en Nicolau no és el culpable.
